iPhone, iPad & Mac · Free · No ads, no tracking
Built for finding words fast.
Lexicon is a focused tool for one job: turning a pile of letters into the longest, highest-scoring word you can play.
Letter-set search
Type your letters in any order, duplicates and all. Lexicon returns every word that can be built from them — no extras, no rearranging.
Letter-chip filter
After a search, pick any letter chip to narrow the results to words containing that letter — useful when you need to cover a specific tile.
Three sort orders
Re-rank by longest word, alphabetical order, or highest Scrabble-style points — instantly.
Search history
Your last 21 searches stay one tap away. Don't retype the same rack twice.
Word detail & definitions
Open any word for its point breakdown letter by letter, then look it up in the system dictionary — offline — or share it.
Four colour themes
Pick a look, light or dark, with an optional drifting-tile background you can switch off. Follows your system appearance.
One dictionary, openly licensed.
Lexicon searches ENABLE — the Enhanced North American Benchmark Lexicon, compiled by Alan Beale and released into the public domain. It's the word list a great many word games are built on.
Public domain, and bundled inside the app so every search works offline.
The whole word list ships with the app. Searching never touches the internet.
Standard letter values, shown per word and per letter, as a guide to word strength.
Common questions.
Does this work offline?
Yes — the entire dictionary lives in the app, so searches don't need a network connection. Looking up a definition hands off to the system dictionary, which works offline too. Only "Search the Web" needs a connection.
Are there ads or in-app purchases?
No ads, and nothing is locked behind a purchase — every feature is available to everyone. There's an optional $0.99 tip jar in the menu if you'd like to support development, but it unlocks nothing. Earlier versions of Lexicon showed banner ads and sold a "Remove Ads" upgrade; both are gone for good.
Why do my searches sometimes show fewer words than I expect?
No single dictionary contains every word. ENABLE covers ordinary play thoroughly, but leaves out some very obscure inflected forms that only turn up in tournament Scrabble adjudication. If a game accepts a word Lexicon doesn't list, that's usually why.
How are points calculated?
Points use the standard Scrabble letter values (A=1, B=3, … Q=10, Z=10). They're a guide for word strength, not a Letterpress score.
The animated background isn't moving.
If your device has Reduce Motion switched on in Accessibility settings, the drifting tiles start out disabled — nobody who asked the system for less animation should get them by surprise. You can turn them on for Lexicon alone from the menu, and that choice sticks.
Is the Mac version the same app?
Same code, same word list, built natively for macOS with a resizable window and proper menu-bar commands. It's included with the iPhone and iPad version — buy nothing, download it on every device you own.
Do you collect any data?
Only what you deliberately send through Send Feedback. No ads, no analytics, no tracking. See the privacy policy for the specifics.
How do I report a bug or request a feature?
Open the menu and choose Send Feedback. The form has an optional email field if you want a reply, and attaches version info automatically. You can also email [email protected].
